What is Blackjack Surrender?
Blackjack Surrender Meaning
Surrender in Blackjack refers to a situation in which a player, judging that the dealer’s upcard (open card) is strong, forfeits the current game and receives half of their bet back . The dictionary definition of the English word “surrender” is “to surrender, to renounce,” so it can be seen as being used in that sense.
Blackjack surrender is divided into late surrender and early surrender depending on the timing decided by the player , and can be seen as a long-term strategic element as it can minimize losses .
Blackjack, a popular table game, can be enjoyed at any casino, but the blackjack surrender rule is known to be only allowed at some online or offline casinos.
For reference, Kangwon Land , the only legal casino in Korea, does not allow Blackjack Surrender , including Blackjack Insurance , which I posted about last time, so it is known to be very unfavorable for developing strategies.
How to Surrender in Blackjack?
When a player checks the dealer’s upcard and his or her own hand and the requirements for surrender are met, he or she can make a gesture of drawing a line on the table with his or her index finger or ask the dealer to surrender. Surrender is accepted and half of the bet amount is returned.
Similarly, in online blackjack, if you meet the surrender requirement for that table, you can press Surrender or Cash Out and receive a portion of your main bet back.
Blackjack Surrender Types
As mentioned above, Blackjack Surrender is divided into two options: Late Surrender and Early Surrender. The characteristics of each option are as follows.
- Late Surrender : When a player surrenders after seeing the dealer’s up card, the dealer checks to see if he has blackjack . If he does not, he forfeits the game.
- Early Surrender : Regardless of whether the dealer has blackjack or not, the player can forfeit the game at any time after seeing the dealer’s upcard.
Late Surrender is a rule mainly used in casinos in Las Vegas, USA. For example, if the dealer’s up card is an Ace or a card worth 10 points (10, J, Q, K), and the player declares surrender, it is not accepted as is, but the dealer’s remaining cards are opened to determine whether or not it is blackjack .
If the dealer’s down card is opened and the dealer’s hand is not a blackjack, the surrender is accepted and half of the bet amount is returned. However, if the dealer’s hand is a blackjack, the surrender is not accepted and the game is lost .
Early surrender , unlike late surrender, is a rule that allows players to forfeit the game without checking the dealer’s down card when declaring surrender, regardless of whether the dealer has blackjack . It is a method mainly used in casinos in Asia and Europe.
Early Surrender is again divided into two options: ’10 Early Surrender’ and ‘Full Early Surrender’. ’10 Early Surrender’ means that you can surrender only when the dealer’s up card is a card worth 10 points (10, J, Q, K), and the option to surrender regardless of the dealer’s up card is called ‘Full Early Surrender’.
Blackjack Surrender Strategy
Blackjack Surrender is a very good betting strategy if you can utilize it, as it allows the player to manage their overall profits while recovering half of their bet when they feel they are at a disadvantage.
However, in order to properly utilize the blackjack surrender option, you need to be familiar with the basic blackjack rules and blackjack strategy chart and aim for the most effective timing.
There is, of course, only one case in which you must choose the surrender option during a game of blackjack.
This is when the player has a weak hand and the dealer has a very strong hand.
Generally speaking, the weakest hand in a game of blackjack is usually a hand with a total of 12 to 16, but excluding cases where you can make a high hand through a bold hit choice, the most unfavorable hand in terms of probability would be around 15 and 16 .

그래서 딜러의 업카드가 9,10,A의 강한 패이고 플레이어의 핸드가 15 혹은 16일 때가 바로 최적의 서렌더 타이밍이라고 할 수 있겠다.
일반적으로 6개에서 8개 정도의 덱을 사용하는 온라인 블랙잭을 기준으로 더 자세히 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
- 플레이어의 핸드가 15이고 딜러의 핸드가 10일 때 서렌더 혹은 히트
- 플레이어의 핸드가 16이고 딜러의 핸드가 9, 10(10,J,Q,K), A일 때 서렌더 혹은 히트
레이트 서렌더 규정에 따르면 위와 같은 타이밍에서 서렌더를 하는 것이 올바른 선택이라고 할 수 있다.
소프트 17 규칙에서의 서렌더
소프트 17 룰이 적용되는 블랙잭 테이블이라면 전략표를 이용한 서렌더 타이밍은 다소 달라질 수가 있다.
일반적인 블랙잭 게임에서 딜러는 하드(A를 제외한 합)/소프트(A+숫자) 여부와는 상관없이 핸드의 합이 17을 넘어서는 순간 히트를 하지 않는다.
하지만 미국의 일부 오프라인 카지노에서는 플레이어처럼 딜러 역시 에이스 카드를 ‘1’로 간주하고 소프트 17 상황(A+6, A+3+3 ··· 등)에서 추가 히트를 가져가는 ‘소프트 17 룰’ 이라는 규정이 존재한다.
해당 규정이 존재하는 블랙잭 테이블의 경우 블랙잭, 인슈어런스 등 사이드 베팅의 배당률과 함께 ‘DEALER MUST HIT SOFT 17(딜러는 반드시 소프트 17 상황에서 히트한다.)’ 라고 적혀 있으며 간단하게 줄여서 ‘H17(히트17)’ 라고 부른다.
참고로 일반적인 블랙잭 게임의 경우에는 ‘DEALER MUST STAND ON 17 AND MUST DRAW TO 16’ 라고 테이블에 적혀있으며 반대로 ‘S17(스탠드17)’ 이라고 부르고 우리가 알다시피 하드/소프트 여부와 상관없이 딜러의 핸드가 17 이상이라면 스탠드를 하게 되는 규칙을 따르게 된다.
이를 감안하여 다시 한번 서렌더 타이밍 표를 보도록 하자
이제 위 표를 보면 눈치챘겠지만 딜러의 핸드가 A가 나왔을 때 일반적인 S17 블랙잭이냐, 소프트 17 룰의 H17 블랙잭이냐에 따라 서렌더 옵션을 선택해야 할 경우가 더 늘어난 것을 확인할 수가 있다.
블랙잭 게임에서 제일 낮은 패로 취급 받는 ’16’의 경우 어떠한 경우에도 딜러의 패가 강할 경우 서렌더를 하는 것이 권장되지만, 소프트 17 룰이 적용되는 블랙잭 게임의 경우 플레이어 핸드가 ’15’, 심지어는 ’17’의 경우에도 서렌더를 선택할 수 있는 타이밍이라는 것을 알 수가 있다.
또한 두 카드의 합은 16이지만 스플릿을 통해 높은 수익을 기대할 수 있는 (8,8)의 플레이어 핸드 상황에서도 소프트 17 룰 블랙잭에서는 서렌더를 선택하는 것이 스플릿 보다 더 괜찮은 옵션으로 여겨지기도 한다.
물론 딜러가 소프트 17에서 추가 히트를 한다고 해서 더 나은 핸드를 완성할 것이라고 확신할 수는 없지만 에이스 카드의 힘을 생각해 보았을 때 결국 히트를 통해 버스트 확률보다는 더 좋은 핸드를 만들 수 있는 확률이 높다.
결론적으로 소프트 17 규칙이 적용되는 블랙잭 게임은 우리가 알고 있는 블랙잭 게임보다 딜러에게 더유리한 게임이라고 볼 수 있으며 실제로 하우스 엣지 (카지노 측 수익 비율)도 0.2% 더 높은 편이다.
블랙잭 서렌더가 플레이어 입장에서 유리하게 사용할 수 있는 규칙이기 때문에 이와 상충되는 소프트 17 룰 블랙잭에서는 아예 서렌더를 허용하지 않는 경우가 많다고 알려져 있지만, 온라인 카지노의 경우에는 다양한 옵션의 블랙잭 게임을 제공하고 있기 때문에 서렌더를 허용하는 H17 블랙잭 테이블도 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다.

블랙잭 서렌더 유리한 옵션인가?
블랙잭 서렌더는 플레이어가 불리한 상황에 놓여져 있을 때에도 기권을 통해 손실을 최소화 할 수 있다는 점에서 상당히 매력적인 옵션으로 다가온다.

So, you might wonder if the blackjack surrender I’m introducing today is actually a disadvantageous option.
However, the fact that blackjack surrender is not allowed by many casinos, unlike the typical side bet of insurance, proves that it is actually a beneficial betting option if used well.
Unlike insurance, which is statistically disadvantageous and predicts the dealer’s probability of blackjack regardless of the player’s hand, surrender is a rule that can be used when the player’s hand is overwhelmingly disadvantageous, so if you memorize the timing well, it can be said that it is strongly recommended to actively use surrender .
The table above summarizes the house edge of blackjack tables based on different surrender rules, payout ratios, and whether or not there is a soft 17 rule. As you can see, the house edge (the casino’s profit margin for long-term betting) is lower when the surrender option is allowed, whether it is early surrender or late surrender, than when there is no surrender.
A lower house edge, or the casino’s profit percentage, means a higher return to player (RTP), meaning the percentage of the winnings the player takes home. This means that blackjack tables that allow surrender are significantly more advantageous than those that don’t.
Precautions
However, one thing to be careful about is that you should never abuse this surrender.
The most common mistake beginner players make is to surrender when the dealer’s upcard is strong and their hand is a little weaker, like 12-17. However, this is absolutely not a proper surrender strategy.
For example, if the player’s hand is 13 and the dealer’s upcard is 10, the probability of avoiding bust by hitting is 8/13, which is a good chance to avoid bust even if the player surrenders, and the dealer cannot eliminate the possibility of busting due to a low-numbered down card. In this case, it is not a better choice to not surrender and instead play an aggressive hit or stand aiming for the dealer’s bust.
Therefore, even though it is complicated, it is recommended that you memorize the surrender timing mentioned above and use the surrender strategy only in appropriate situations. Even though it is a strategy to reduce losses , it is a system that ultimately returns only half of the amount bet, so rather than trying to run the game too reliably, it will be a much more interesting experience to enjoy blackjack by occasionally aiming for high profits through aggressive play .
